A Reservist earns money for education, family, cash bonuses etc. There is also health care, life insurance, accommodation and many other benefits granted to a Reservist. However, many employers worry regarding Reservist mobilisation and the additional costs that it incurs. But, there is a financial assistance which enables employers to cover certain costs of replacing a Reservist when he/she is mobilized. You are not required to pay the Reservist employee whilst he/she is on mobilisation as they will be on military pay during this time. You can claim financial assistance for overtime in case you use other employees to cover the work of Reservist. You can also claim salary costs of a temporary employee if it exceeds the Reservist employee’s salary. You can claim up to £110 per day or £40,000 a year as additional cost. You can also claim for non-recurring costs, training costs of the Reservist employee after he/she returns and other claims. Being an employer, you have certain legal rights and responsibilities regarding the mobility of Reservist and the time when they are reinstated at work. There are two types of protection that the Reserve Forces (Safeguard of Employment) Act 1985 (SOE 85) have provided to the Reservists who are liable to mobilisation. The protection of employment Act protects the Reservist from unjust dismissal and deems it as an unlawful offence, if the employer terminates a Reservist from his job during mobilisation. The Right to reinstatement Act gives a legal right to re-establish the Reservist to his/her former job, under some conditions.
